PEABODY- Mrs. Winifred Frances (Burke) Coombs 89, of Peabody, beloved wife of Thomas J. Coombs, died Sunday, evening, May 14th, 2017 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Margaret (Tyrrell) Burke. She was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of the former St. James High School in Salem.

Mrs. Coombs had been employed as a Nurses' Aid at the former Shaughnessy-Kaplan Hospital for many years prior to her retirement in 1987.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, Winnie was devoted to her family. She was a longtime resident of the City of Salem and was a communicant of St. James Church in Salem. She was a Union Steward and Chairperson for the City of Salem Union -AFSCME. She loved to travel with her husband and family, especially to Jamaica and the islands, was an avid reader and had a passion for race horses. Above all else she was devoted to her husband Tom and enormously proud of her children and grandchildren. She could often be found cheering them on at their life's milestones. She will be remembered for her caring and loving nature, her quick wit and ever present smile. Winnie will be deeply missed.

Winnie is survived by her beloved husband Thomas J. Coombs of Peabody, her daughters, Stephanie Goddu and her husband Arthur of Franklin, N.C., Mikki Blazak and her dear friend Richard Mowbray of Danvers and Margaret "Beth" Powers and her husband Michael of Lynn, her son William Blazak and his wife Tina of Salem, her grandchildren, Thomas Cobb and his wife Terri of Peabody, Shannon Blazak and her fiancé Pete Medeiros of North Andover, Brian Cobb and Melanie Myers of Virginia Beach and Christopher Powers of Lynn and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Mary McMath and her brothers, Joseph, Thomas, Jack, Daniel and Gerald Burke.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held from the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home 167 Maple St., (rte 62) Danvers, Friday, May 19th at 9:15 A.M. followed by her funeral Mass in the Chapel of St. James Church, Federal St., Salem at 10 A.M.. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours Thursday, May 18th from 4 to 7 P.M. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Winnie's memory to Kaplan Family Hospice, 75 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923.
