DANVERS – Mr. Lewis A. Spates Jr. 70, of Danvers, beloved husband of Judith A. (Richmond) Spates, died Saturday evening, February 2nd, 2019 at the Blueberry Hill Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Born in Beverly, he was the son of Josephine M. (Hunter) Spates and the late Lewis A. Spates Sr. He was raised and educated in Danvers and was a graduate of Danvers High School. He continued his education at Salem State College, earning his Bachelor's Degree in English and at Northeastern University earning his Master's Degree in Education.

An educator for his entire professional career, Mr. Spates had been employed as a special education teacher at the Oliver School in Lawrence for many years. More recently he was an adjunct professor at Northern Essex Community College until the time of his retirement in 2018.

A loving husband and son, Lewis was an avid gardener. He took great pride in his gardens and he enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor, always giving his home-grown vegetables to family and friends. He was a lifelong resident of the Town of Danvers and a member of the First Baptist Church of Danvers.

Lewis is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Judith A. (Richmond) Spates of Danvers, his 109-year-old mother, Josephine M. (Hunter) Spates of Danvers, his cousins, Bruce Getchell of Danvers and Myron Peabody of Rowley, his beloved beagle Maggie and extended family. He will be deeply missed.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held in the First Baptist Church of Danvers, Water St., Danvers, Thursday, Feb. 7th at 10 A.M. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial in Wadsworth Cemetery, Danvers. Visiting hours in the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (rte 62) Danvers, Wednesday, Feb. 6th from 3 to 6 P.M.
