DANVERS - Mrs. Josephine (Hunter) Spates, 109, of Danvers, beloved wife of the late Lewis A. Spates, died Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at Linden Senior Living in Danvers.

Born in New Brunswick, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Miles and Bessie (Munn) Hunter. Josephine was one of 16 children who grew up happily on the banks of the Miramichi River. She received her education in the New Brunswick School System. Josephine immigrated to the United States in 1926 and continued her education at Wentworth Hospital Nursing School in Dover, New Hampshire, where she received her nursing degree.

Mrs. Spates, together with her husband Lewis, owned and operated the Corner Grocery in Danvers for many years. They were well known in the community. Josephine enjoyed the time spent at the store chatting with customers she called friends, enjoying their stories and being a part of their lives. She had an easy smile and outgoing personality that endeared her to many. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by her family and the many friends she made along the way.

Josephine was pre-deceased by her only child, Lewis A. Spates, Jr. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Judith Spates of Danvers, her nephews, Myron Peabody and his wife Carolyn of Rowley, and Bruce Getchell and his wife Carol of Danvers, and many grand-nieces and nephews. She also has many dear relatives in Canada.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral service will be held in the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) Danvers on Tuesday, June 11th at 11 A.M. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours will be held, prior to the service from 10 to 11 A.M. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Josephine's memory to All Care Hospice Development Office, 210 Market St., Lynn, MA 01901. Great Aunt Jo will be deeply missed by all who knew her, she was a kind and loving lady and I loved all of her stories she told me of her life with my Grandmother and the rest of her siblings growing up here on the Miramichi. A beautiful, warm and gentle lady. RIP Great Aunt Jo
