Obituary for Mrs. Annick Josette Louise Menard

July 27, 1934 - January 23, 2020
Topsfield, Massachusetts | Age 85

TOPSFIELD – Mrs. Annick Josette Louise Menard, 85, of Topsfield, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 23, 2020 in the comfort of her home.

Born in the ancestral family home in Dahouët, France in 1934, she was the daughter of the late Pierre Menard, a ship captain, and Louise Menard (née Durand de Kerjegu). She grew up in Dahouët and the neighboring village of the Val-André, in Brittany.

As a teenager, she contracted tuberculosis and was sent to Paris to be treated. She was one of the very first children to be treated with a promising new regimen, and survived with very few consequences. Her experiences during her lengthy convalescence led her to go back to finish High School with honors, and enroll at the prestigious nursing program at Paris' Salpêtrière hospital.

She married Henri Odilon Berteaux, who she motivated and supported to become a noted physicist and oceanographer. They emigrated to Canada and later to the US, while returning to France often and travelling widely. They had two children, Jean-Marc and Philippe.

Annick was an avid sailor, current affairs wonk, and cook. After raising her two boys, she returned to college and received her RN degree and became a visiting nurse on Cape Cod. Annick and Henri divorced amiably and it was through mutual friends that Annick met and later married Ralph Little, a retired scientist. After 12 wonderful years she was widowed, and spent time between her homes in Florida and France, while spending increasing time in Nahant, MA with her eldest son. She moved there full time several years ago to be taken care of, gently teased, and pampered. She continued to drive a manual convertible, and was known locally as "leadfoot". The family moved to an old farm in Topsfield in 2018, where she enjoyed the fresh razzberries and peaches, while being an integral part of the family.

Annick is survived by her sons, Jean-Marc and Philippe Berteaux, and by her grandson Brett Berteaux, her brother Pierre Menard and sister Nicole Bazzola, and her niece Virginie Bazzola and nephew Julien Menard.
