Obituary for B. Willard "Bill" Greene

July 27, 1934 - June 7, 2018
Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts | Age 83

MANCHESTER-By-THE-SEA – Mr. B. Willard "Bill" Greene 83, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, husband of Davetta V. "Davie" Greene, died Thursday, June 7, 2018.

Born in Dover, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late Blandford O. and Mary Isabel Sylvester (Springer) Greene. He was raised and educated Portland, Maine and graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth, Maine where he met his future wife "Davie"

An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a member of the United States Army. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan as a radar repair Specialist and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Upon his discharge from the Army, Bill focused on his education and enrolled at the University of Maine, Orono, where he earned his Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1960.

Bill and Davie lived in Orono, Maine while he was earning his degree and in 1960 they moved to Manchester-by-the-Sea where they still reside today. Mr. Greene began a career with the United Shoe Machine Corporation that would last over 36 years until the time of his retirement in 1996. His professional focus was in research and development and he held several patents through the Shoe. He was a smart and intelligent man who had a knack for figuring things out. This helped him tremendously in his profession. He was a dedicated and steadfast engineer.

Mr. Greene was a dedicated husband and father. He loved sports, especially having the chance to cheer on his daughter and especially his son while he played football for the Manchester High School Hornets. He would gladly miss weddings, reunions, you name it to watch his son play football. This love of watching sporting events and supporting his family transcended generations in that he never missed a home game of his granddaughter's college lacrosse and field hockey career. He was always supporting on the sidelines as a proud father and grandfather and took great pride in their accomplishments.

Active in civic circles, Bill was a member of the Presumpscot Lodge A.F. & A.M. Windham, ME. He was an Indian Guide, a Boy Scout leader and coached little league and youth softball. He also was the clock winder for the First Parish Congregational Church in Manchester for several years. He enjoyed spending his time, hiking, fishing, woodworking, skiing and later in life enjoyed his fishing trips with his son and family gatherings at his daughter's house. He was a good husband, father and grandfather who will be missed.

Bill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Davetta V. "Davie" Greene of Manchester, his daughter Lynda Mscisz and her husband Mark of Topsfield, his son, David W. Greene and his wife Cindy of Lancaster and his beloved grandchildren, Denver, Dustin, Brittany, Dakota, Wyatt and Tucker.
