Obituary

PEABODY – Mrs. Mary Margaret (Stoops) Rhys 92, of Brooksby Village, Peabody, beloved wife of the late Barry Sullivan Rhys, died Monday, June 4, 2018 at Continuing Care at Brooksby Village.

Born in Peru, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Elvina (King) Stoops. She was raised and educated in Peru, Indiana and was a graduate of Peru High School. She continued her education at the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated in 1945. She married Barry S. Rhys in August of 1948.

Music was always in her heart and soul. Mrs. Rhys was a performer in the first televised Opera in the United States. She generously shared her amazing voice with many organizations, especially augmenting her congregation's music program.

She was an outgoing woman who had many friends over the course of her life and loved to entertain. She was always a gracious host and her home was always filled with family and dear lifelong friends.

Active in civic and religious circles, Mary was a member of the league of woman voters in North Andover and was a member of the North Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in North Andover. A longtime resident of the town of North Andover, she more recently enjoyed her thirteen years residing at Brooksby Village, and continued to make many friends who brought great joy to her life. She was a devoted wife, mother and friend who will be deeply missed.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Mimi Rhys and her wife Renee Shapiro of Brighton, and Marcie Rhys and her husband Charles Norton of Arlington.
