SALEM- Mrs. Josephine "Josie" Rita (Giunta) Cultrera, 98, of Salem, beloved wife of 65 years to the late Paul S. Cultrera, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family in the same room where she was born.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Maria (Lotta) Giunta. She was raised and educated in Salem, and was a graduate of the former St. James Grammar School and Salem High School.

Josie began her professional career at Sylvania. She was a waitress at the former New Ocean House Restaurant at the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead. She accepted a position as the Cafeteria Aide at the Horace Mann School in Salem and most recently she had been employed as a Secretary with the Special Education Department at Salem High School until the time of her retirement.

Josie was first and foremost a mother and nurturer. She dedicated her life to her loving husband and children and always provided a loving and warm home for them to come home to. She was a lifelong resident of the City of Salem and an active parishioner of the former St. Mary Italian Church of Salem. She was a member of the Order Sons of Italy - Veturia Romana Mixed Lodge #1200 of Salem; the former St. Mary Italian Church Ladies Sodality of Salem and volunteered for many years as a poll worker for Ward 3:1 at Salem High School until the age of 95. She was an avid and voracious reader, enjoyed her weekly Bingo games, and in her younger years was an avid bowler.

Josie will be remembered for her laugh and sunny disposition which always brought a smile to those in her presence. She shared her love through baked goods, from cookies to pies and desserts; the Cultrera home was always filled with delicious aromas and love. She will be deeply missed by her family and her many loving and lifelong friends.

Josie is survived by her daughter, Maria Morello and her husband Robert of Salem, her sons, Paul S. Cultrera Jr formerly of Gloucester, and Joseph A. Cultrera and his fiancée Mary Beth Bainbridge of Salem, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was the sister of the late, Grace Fossa, Catherine, Jenny, Peter, Frank, John and Matthew Giunta.
