MARBLEHEAD- Mrs. Lois Helena (Merrow) Denis 83, of Salem, formerly of Marblehead, beloved wife of the late Edward G. Denis, died Wednesday, Oct. 12th, 2016 at the John Bertram House in Salem.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late John and Ethel (Ferris) Merrow. She was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School. She continued her education at Burdett College in Boston.

Mrs. Denis began her professional career with the General Electric Company until the time of starting her family. After raising five children, Lois went back to the
professional world and began a 30 year career with the Marblehead Public School System as an Administrative Assistant having been associated with Marblehead
High School, the School Administrative Building and the Marblehead Middle School.

Upon retirement Lois and her beloved Ed were able to travel the world alongside family and friends. Lois always surrounded herself with loved ones and was the guiding light for many people throughout their lives. She cherished all of the friends she met throughout the course of her life and many of her closest associates were lifelong.

Upon moving to Marblehead, Lois ingrained herself into the community and fabric of the Town. She was a member of the Marblehead Women's Club, the Marblehead Council on Aging, the Marblehead Historical Society, where she volunteered as a docent, tour guide and archivist at the Lee Mansion and was an active communicant of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church and past president of the Mother's Club of the Church. She was active with the Daughters of the American Revolution, Timothy Pickering Chapter in Salem and the House of Seven Gables - Emmerton Society "Settlement House". History always piqued her curiosity and she acquired a vast knowledge of local Salem and Marblehead history. She was known as the botanist by family and friends for her ability to garden indoors and out of doors. She loved to host parties and gatherings for her neighbors, friends and family. Her door was always open and her heart was full of all of the love she received from so many.

Later in life when the grandchildren arrived she could be found in the stands supporting them to the fullest, at all of their events. She cherished cats and dogs especially her latest feline companion, "Arnold". The last three years as a resident of the John Bertram House in Salem have been a blessing because of all the relationships she built and she especially enjoyed handing out over 500 bags of treats on Halloween. She had a special affection for music, literature, the ocean and boating in her younger years, but above all else it was the relationships she forged that made Lois most proud and always loved. She will be missed.

Lois is survived by her daughters, Paula M. Piraino and her husband Salvatore J. of Beverly and Jennifer M. Nisbet and her husband Jim of Swampscott, her son,
Matthew Edward Denis and his wife Margaret J. of Marblehead, her six grandchildren, Michael and Laura Piraino, Jeremy and Leanne Nisbet and Shannon and Nicholas Denis and several nieces and nephews.
