SALEM - Mr. Rocco Matthew Giardi, 77, of Salem, beloved husband of Joan M. (Collatos) Giardi, died Monday, December 14th, 2015 at Salem Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Beverly, he was the son of the late Rocco and Vincenza (Montoni) Giardi. He was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School, class of 1957.

A talented and accomplished athlete, Rocco excelled as a member of the Salem High School Football team. He was a 3 year starter and Captain of the Salem Witches varsity football team. Rocco was driven by leadership and success, most notably for the 7 to 6 win over Beverly during the annual Thanksgiving Day game his senior year. Rocco was a superb and outstanding sportsman throughout his life on both the baseball diamond and football field. He was named an Essex County League All Star in football and a 2nd Team All-State player. He was recognized as one of the toughest and most competitive football players to don the Witches uniform. He excelled as a member of the Varsity Baseball team at Salem High School where he was a 4 year varsity starter and captain. A few of Rocky's athletic accolades include earning 1st team All Star of the Essex County League and All-State Baseball Player.

For his efforts and accomplishments as an athlete, he was inducted into the Salem High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009, an honor he truly relished. Rocky's family's reputation is known as one of the greatest athletic families in the history of Salem High School. He was very proud of this honor. He was a devoted supporter of his brother's and nephews' athletic endeavors. He never missed an athletic event played by his grandchildren, and he was always proud of their athletic endeavors. His lifelong love of athletic competition, support of Salem High School athletics, and devotion to his grandchildren will be some of his lifetime hallmarks.

Mr. Giardi was a talented mason who began a long career with Montoni Masonry Construction Company in Beverly where he worked for over 20 years. He was well known for his dedication and proficiency in his field of masonry and construction, having completed many masonry projects around the State of Massachusetts for over 50 years. He was an active member of the bricklayers and mason's union of Boston for over 40 years.

A longtime resident of the City of Salem and a lifetime athlete, Rocco never missed a Salem - Beverly Thanksgiving Game. He was a member of the fast pitch softball league for many years, playing for the Colonials and Ralph's Clippers. He loved spending time at Winter Island in Salem and was a member of the Former St. Mary's Italian Church, also of Salem. He was a member of the Christopher Columbus Society, the PLAV, the Crow II Club of Salem, I.C.C. in Beverly and the Union Club. Even with his tough athletic exterior, he was a caring, kind and supportive friend who will be deeply missed.

Rocky was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle whose dedication and support of his family will be what everyone remembers when they think of him. He will be profoundly missed.

In addition to his loving wife of 56 years, Rocco is survived by his son, Jon R. Giardi of Salem, his two daughters, Patricia (Giardi) Correale and her husband Michael of Peabody and Kimberly (Giardi) Whitt and her husband Terry of Jacksonville, N.C., his six grandchildren, Mandy Maryanski, Michael and Matthew Correale, Justin and Cody Whitt and Shane Walter, his siblings, Marion Chronis, Evelyn Marquis and her husband Norman all of Georgetown, and Al "Butch" Giardi and his wife Jane of Salem, his brother-in-law Sal Orlando of Salem and many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
